Canadian Mixed to be held at Calgary Curling Club, November 10 -
16, 2007.
The Canadian Curling Association today finalized the Canadian championship schedule for the 2007-08 season by confirming the date and site for the 2008 Canadian Mixed. The Canadian Mixed will be held November 10-16, 2007 at the Calgary Curling Club.
The Mixed, which began in 1964 in Toronto, brings together 12 teams representing the 10 provinces plus Yukon/Northwest Territories and Northern Ontario.
It will mark the first time that Calgary has hosted the Mixed. However, the Calgary Curling Club has recently staged two other Canadian championships, the 2002 Canadian Seniors and 1998 Canadian Juniors.
Alberta and Saskatchewan lead all provinces with eight Mixed titles each. Alberta's last win came in 2004 in Schumacher, Ontario by Calgary's Shannon Kleibrink, who became the first female skip to win the Canadian championship.
Last year in Kitchener, the Mixed was captured by New Brunswick's Terry Odishaw. The last time the Mixed was held in Alberta was in 2000 in Lethbridge, when it was won by the host province's Kevin Koe.
The co-chairs for the 2008 Canadian Mixed will be John Hamm and Ron Franklin. For further information, contact
Robert Laycock, Calgary Curling Club manager, at 403-283-8381 or
boblaycock@calgarycurlingclub.com or
2008mixed@calgarycurlingclub.com. Visit the Mixed web site here.
Two players from the winning team will also represent Canada at the first World Mixed Doubles Championship, March 9-15 in Vierumäki, Finland.
The competition format for the Mixed is a round robin, after which the first place teams advance to the finals, while the second and third place teams meet in semi-finals.
Canadian Curling Association names new Chief Executive Officer
Wednesday, August 29, 2007 | Source: Canadian Curling Association
O TTAWA, August 29, 2007.The Canadian Curling Association (CCA) today announced that Mr. Greg Stremlaw has been hired as its new Chief Executive Officer.
Stremlaw, a 36-year old native of Niagara Falls, Ontario, will officially assume his duties on October 9, 2007, as the CEO of Canada's sanctioning body for the sport of curling. He replaces Dave Parkes, who retired in May after a 19-year career with the CCA.
Currently a resident of Cambridge, Ontario, Stremlaw was most recently the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the Chicopee Ski & Summer Resort in Kitchener, where he has been employed since 2002. Prior to that, he worked as Director, Sport Services & Bobsleigh/Luge for the Calgary Olympic Development Association (CODA) from 1996-2002, which included his role as Race Chairman/Race Director for all International World Championships/World Cup events in the sports of Skeleton, Luge and Bobsleigh.
He also holds degrees from the University of Miami (Masters of Sports Management) in Coral Gables, Florida, the University of Maine (Masters of Business Administration) in Orono, Maine and the University of Western Ontario (Bachelor of Arts in Commerce) in London, Ontario.
"On behalf of the Canadian Curling Association, I am really excited to announce that our search for a new Chief Executive Officer has been successful," said CCA President Al Forsythe. "I would like to extend a sincere and warm welcome to Greg Stremlaw. He has a wealth of experience and background in sport, making him well-suited to lead the CCA not only in our day-to-day operation, but also in guiding us through our governance transition. His appointment as CEO was ratified unanimously by the CCA Board of Directors at a recent meeting and a special thanks goes to the CEO Search Committee for a job well done."
The hiring of Mr. Stremlaw is the culmination of a three-month search conducted by Ray & Berndtson, an international executive search firm and Canada's largest corporate placement agency, on behalf of the CCA.
CCA Board members Graham Prouse, Georgina Anderson, Fran Todd, CCA Vice-President Beth Sullivan and CCA past president Donna Duffett were the members of the CEO Search Committee, working in conjunction with Ray & Berndtson.
"On behalf of the CCA CEO Search Committee, I would like to thank the search firm of Ray & Berndtson - Ottawa, who guided us very effectively through a thorough and exhaustive search for a new CEO for the CCA," said Graham Prouse, Chair, CEO Selection Committee.
"Their goal at the outset was to provide us with a slate of candidates whose experience and abilities would be good choices for the position. The impressive group of short-list and interview candidates spoke highly to the quality and integrity of the search and our choice of Greg Stremlaw is one in which we have a great deal of confidence. We are excited for the future of the CCA and curling in Canada under Greg's leadership."
"I am excited to be involved in helping take the CCA in a new direction," added Stremlaw. "We want to have a vision of excellence, a vision that includes running this sport as a business with sound financial practices, teambuilding, grassroots development and capturing the minds of the youth in this great country. I look forward to being part of many significant curling events in the coming years, especially the 2010 Winter Olympics in our own backyard. It is imperative that we use these events to help catapult the sport of curling to yet another level. I genuinely look forward to being a part of that process along with the entire CCA team."
Hec Gervais Scholarship Fund is pleased to announce the 2007 Award Recipients
Male Winner - Scott Garnett, Strathmore
Female Winner - Joanne Taylor, Edmonton
Best of the Rest - Dalen Peterson, Beaverlodge
All of the applications submitted were worthy of a scholarship. Of the seven remaining ballots once the male and female were chosen, 5 different applications each received a vote from one of the Directors.

Continental Cup returns to Medicine Hat.
More than half of the tickets for November's Continental Cup of Curling have already been sold, reports Host Committee Chairman Des Grant.
"We're very pleased with ticket sales at this point," said Grant. "When we last hosted this unique competition in 2004, we started selling tickets in December, 11 months before the event. This time around, we didn't get underway until February.
"So with sales already at 2,259 (Arena capacity is 4,026), we're very confident we'll have close to a sellout again. As you know, Medicine Hat staged the most successful of the four Continental Cups to date and as a committee we are doing our utmost to equal that feat.
"Obviously, we're very excited about today's news regarding Monsanto as the presenting sponsor," continued Grant. "They like the event and so do we. We're also very thankful to all of the local sponsors who have come on board and are such an important component to ensure the event's success. I might also mention that the committee is still looking for more volunteers. We've got about 180 people right now but we'd like another 80 or so."
The Continental Cup, presented by Monsanto, will hold its fifth edition, December 13-16 at the Medicine Hat Arena.
Patterned somewhat after golf's Ryder Cup, it brings together six teams representing Team North America and six teams representing Europe in a four-day competition involving Team games (72 points), Mixed Doubles (36 points), Singles (32 points) and Skins games (260 points). The first side to score 201 points is declared the winner.

The Southern Alberta Curling Association has adopted the Alberta Curling Federation's Screening Policy for coaches.
ALL Coaches for Juvenile and Junior curling teams will be required to provide the SACA with a Police Criminal Record check.
While the ACF does not recognize the Bantam category at the provincial level and therefore does not include Bantam in this screening, the SACA encourages Bantam coaches to participate in this new policy.
This process will not be waived under any circumstance and is mandatory starting with the 2007-2008 season for all coaches of Juvenile and Junior teams
Please be aware that some Police Stations and RCMP Detachments require a "request for Criminal Record letter" from the organization requiring the criminal check. The SACA office can provide you with that request on Association letterhead.
We have also been advised that some police detachments can take 3-4 weeks to return the check. Please forward your completed Criminal Record Check to the office as soon as you have received it. As an absolute deadline, your Criminal Record Check together with a completed " Coach Application " form obtained from SACA, must be received from all coaches by the registration deadline for their team entering playdowns. Coaches without completed Criminal Record Checks will not be allowed to coach teams in playdowns!
Any fees associated with obtaining this check will be the responsibility of the coach.
Thank you for providing these two documents to the Southern Alberta Curling Association office. |

New format for Men's and Women's Provincials.
At the ACF AGM on Friday the motion to expand the Women's and Men's Provincials to 12 team Triple Knock-outs was approved. This means that the Provincials will be a triple knockout with a page system playoff effective this year.
In a related item, the ACF has included a travel subsidy in their approved budget for the next 3 years. The subsidy will be $500 per team in both the Men's and Women's categories, for each of the teams that qualifies directly into the Provincials (rather than progressing through Districts - this travel subsidy will still be paid by SACA). The determination of the 4 direct teams for Women's play in the up-coming year will be 1. the defending champion, 2 & 3 from the CTRS listing, 4. top team from the Alberta tour. The Alberta tour and related point/qualification information will be determined and published at a later date.
If you have any questions please email Brent or call the SACA office at 246-9300.
